Why I Teach or How I Am Trying To Be A Mary In A Martha World
I don't know about you, but sometimes I get caught up in the business of being busy. At school we have had a lot of things to disrupt our schedule; from snow days, to field trips, to testing, to sporting events, this nine weeks have been hectic to say the least. So when I have my kids I try to cram in everything we are "supposed to" be doing. And I often forget what I am really there for.
On Monday God had me slow down and realize what an important task he has laid before me. If I just step out of his way, God will make great things happen. In the morning I have a small reading group, where we work on fundamentals and build on their knowledge so they will become more proficient. I had my book out ready to begin and half my students were gone, leaving two students with me. I was frustrated. I wanted to get through our reading and work on sentence structure, but I felt with only two of them there we shouldn't skip ahead.I had both students grab makeup work from other classes and we began working together.
But instead of staying on topic, my two students talked about what was going on in their lives. At one point I started tearing up. I listened and they talked. I knew God was using this time for me to build them up and to tell them that even though sometimes we make bad choices, or other people make bad choices we can still use them for good. That they can change, and make better decisions. I can't proclaim Jesus's name in a public school, but I can show them Jesus by building them up, encouraging them and loving them as Jesus would.
I have an important job, my school is my mission field, I don't need to be in Africa or a homeless shelter (although those can be very good things too) to make a difference for Jesus.
I pray that you are on the look out for how God is using you in your daily life too!!
I need to read this more often to remind me how important slowing down really is.
P.S. If you read She Reads Truth, they are starting an amazing Kickstarter for an iphone app!
